Erstaufführung 11. April 1727 in St. Thomas (siehe Eintrag von eineinhalb Takten der Violine I aus BWV 244.1/65 in die Viola-Originalstimme des Sanctus vom 13. April (?) desselben Jahres, siehe BWV 232.1 (Werkgeschichte)).
Wiederaufführung 1729 (vgl. Brief an Christoph Gottlob Wecker in Schweidnitz: "Mit der verlangten Passions Musique wollte gerne dienen, wenn sie nicht selbsten heuer benöthiget wäre", siehe Dok. I Nr. 20).
Die Erstfassung weicht in vielen Details von der Neufassung ab (siehe BWV 244.2).
1729 wurden zehn Sätze (Satz 6, 8, 13, 20, 23, 39, 49, 57, 65 und 68) für die verschollene Trauermusik für Fürst Leopold von Anhalt-Köthen parodiert; siehe BWV 1143 (Satzfolge und Parodiebeziehungen).

Comment

differences to BWV 244 (in the copy by Farlau): movement 17 missing; mvt. 19: Traverse flutes instead of Recorder; mvt. 29: Chorale "Jesum lass ich nicht von mir"; mvt. 30: B solo instead A solo; mvt. 56 and 57: Laute instead of Viola da gamba.
