First performance on December 10, 1718, in Köthen as a church cantata for the birthday of Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Köthen at St. Jacob’s church. The musical setting is likely by Bach due to his role as court Kapellmeister; see also the Köthen Chamber accounts (Cammer-Rechnung) from December 16, 1718 (An den Capell-Meister Bachen [To Kapellmeister Bach] as well as to the guest musicians J.G. Riemschneider (Vor den einige Wochen hier gewesenen Bassisten [formerly the bassist who had been here a few weeks earlier]), J.G. Linike (ConcertMeister from Merseburg), J.G. Vogler (from Leipzig), and the Discantisten
Prese [soprano Prese], see Dok. II Nr. 93), which probably also refers to the birthday cantata BWV 66.1 performed on the same day. The music is lost.
Sequence of movements (according to the text print by Menantes 1719) and possible parody relationship:
1. Chorus: Lobet den HErrn, all seine Heerschaaren, see BWV 69.1/1?
2. Recit.: MEin Leben kommt aus deiner Hand
3. Aria: Ich lebe HErr! mein Hertz soll dich erheben
4. Recit.: Was nutzte mir ein zeitlich Lebens-Gut
5. Aria: HErr, laß meine Seele leben
6. Recit.: HErr, dein Gericht, In dem die höchste Weisheit spricht
7. Aria: Herrsche Du selber mit Gnaden von oben
