First performance on the occasion of the Leipzig Council election on August 29, 1740, in St. Nikolai (Description of the event’s proceedings in the text print Leipzig 1740; as indicated by Dok. II Nr. 452, Note II). Bach’s authorship is substantiated, among other things, by its parodic relationship to BWV 208.1/15 (see below). For the annual commissioning of Leipzig Council election music from Bach, see BWV 1140.
