Date of origin, Work history

First performance on June 5, 1732, on the occasion of the reopening of the renovated Thomasschule. The authorship of Bach and the text author Winckler (university professor and school colleague of Bach) is verified through the original text print (edition of 600 copies, compare with the cash book of Breitkopf publishing house dated June 4, 1732; see Dok. II Nr. 310). Music, except for the recitatives, was reused in the following year in a reworking by Picander for BWV 1158/1; it is also likely the original version for BWV 11/1 (Dürr 1962); for further hypotheses regarding parody relationships, see NBA I/39 KB.

Sequence of movements (according to the original text print) and parody relationships:
1. Aria: Froher Tag, verlangte Stunden; see BWV 1158/1 and BWV 11/1
2. [Recit.]: Wir stellen uns jetzt vor
3. Aria: Väter unsrer Linden-Stadt; see BWV 1158/3
4. [Recit.]: Begierd und Trieb zum Wissen
5. Tutti: So last uns durch Reden und Mienen entdecken; see BWV 1158/5
Nach den Reden.
6. Aria: Geist und Herze sind begierig; see BWV 1158/7
7. [Recit.]: So groß ist Wohl und Glück
8. Aria: Doch man ist nicht frey und los; see BWV 1158/9
9. [Recit.]: Wenn Weisheit und Verstand
10. Tutti: Ewiges Wesen, das alles erschafft; see BWV 1158/11
