Date of origin, Work history
vor dem 25. August 1731
First performance on August 25, 1731, in Leipzig to celebrate the birthday of the Leipzig Governor Joachim Friedrich Reichsgraf von Flemming. The music is lost, and the composer is not mentioned in the first print. Bach’s authorship is likely due to prosodic similarities with the opening chorus from BWV 248.2 VI, which this movement might originally represent; also compare with the cantata dedicated to Flemming, see BWV 210.1.
Sequence of movements (according to first print by Picander 1737) and parody relationship:
1. Aria: So kämpffet nur, ihr muntern Thöne, see BWV 248.1/1 and BWV 248.2/54
2. [Recit.]: Heut ist ein Tag der Lust
3. Aria: Sey willkommen frohes Licht
4. [Recit.]: Gleichwie ein Fluß
5. Aria: Wie die satten Schafe
6. [Recit.]: Laß Deine Gnad und Güte
7. Aria: Lebe und grüne, grosser Flemming
