10 January 1734 (dedication)
The simple canon was written down by Bach in a "Stammbuch" and later removed from its context. The autograph family register entry (privat property, see original source) is: Canon a 2. perpetuus. | [canon follows] | Leipzig. d. 10. Januar: | 1734. [on the right side:] Dieses wolte seinem Herrn Pathen | zum Andencken beyfügen | Joh: Seb: Bach. (see Dok. I Nr. 167). It is not known to whom this canon was dedicated; among Bach's godchildren ("Herrn Pathen"), who were already adults in 1734, the most likely candidate is Johann Gottfried Walther the Younger (*1712), who attended the University of Jena from 1732 (see Schulze BJ 1967).
