The simple canon was written down by Bach in a "Stammbuch" and later removed from its context. It is not known to whom this canon was dedicated; among Bach's godchildren ("Herrn Pathen"), who were already adults in 1734, the most likely candidate is Johann Gottfried Walther the Younger (*1712), who attended the University of Jena from 1732 (see Schulze BJ 1967).
