The canon published in riddle form by Bach himself is dedicated to the future Hamburg law scholar Ludwig Friedrich Hudemann, who was matriculated at Leipzig University on February 24, 1727; for possible solutions to the riddle canon, see Early Prints.

The autograph and original print have not been passed down.
The autograph resolution owned by Johann Gottfried Walther is lost (see Walther's letter to Heinrich Bokemeyer dated January 24, 1738; Dok. II Nr. 410).

I Nr. 158), mit Erklärung von Mattheson: Der berühmte Bach […] hat noch vor einigen Jahren ein solches Kunst-Stück verfertiget und in Kupffer stechen lassen, auch einem grossen Könner der Music, einem wicklich hochgelahrten Lehrer der Rechten, der mir die Ehre gethan hat, mein Zuhörer im melopoetischen Collegio zu seyn, solches zugeschrieben hat. […] Das ist eine Rätsel-mäßige Kreis-Fuge, auf Welsch: Canone enimmatico, auf Lateinisch Canon ænigmaticus […]. Weil das obige Rätsel nun eben von Leipzig kam den 18 Aug 1727, wie wir in unsern Lehr-Stunden begriffen waren, so muste sich ein iedes Mitglied der anwesenden Gesellschaft darüber machen, und die Auflösung suchen und versuchen.
