Bach himself entered the canon in riddle form in the "Stammbuch" of the notary and Weimar "Stadtschreiber" Johann Christoph Gebhard (see Maul 2011); Gebhard also played as a musical adjunct in the court orchestra there before Bach's appointment in Weimar.

[right:] Dieses wenige wolte dem Herrn | Besitzer zu geneigtem An- | gedencken hier einzeichnen | Joh: Sebast. Bach. | Fürstl. Sächs. HoffOrg. ./. Cammer-Musicus. (see Dok. I Nr. 147). The autograph single leaf was separated out of the family register (D-WZrs: Stb 456) and sold separately.
