Date of origin, Work history: First performance planned for October 7, 1734, but postponed in favor of BWV 215. First performance on October 7, 1736, by the Bach Collegium Musicum at Zimmermann’s Coffee House for the birthday of the Saxon Elector Friedrich August II (King August III of Poland): morgenden Sonntag, den 7. Oct. Abends um 8. Uhr [...] eine solenne Music unter Trompeten und Paucken [on the following Sunday, at 8 p.m., [...] a solemn piece of music will be performed with trumpets and timpani] (Leipziger Zeitungen, Beilage, 6. Oktober 1736, as indicated by Dok. II Nr. 386). Subsequent performance on August 3, 1740, by the Bach Collegium Musicum at Zimmermann’s Garden Venue for the Elector and King’s name day: soll heute Nachmittags [...] ein solennes Drama aufgeführt werden [this afternoon, [...] a solemn drama will be performed] (Leipziger Zeitungen, 3. August 1740, as indicated by Dok. II Nr. 479); with additional flauto traverso I/II parts in movement 1 and 11, with a text variation in movement 10
