Date of origin, Work history

First performance on July 11, 1723 (autograph date); subsequent performance around 1746–1749, likely only the first part (scribe basso continuo part). A version hitherto cataloged under BWV² 186a goes back only to the text print from Weimar in 1717 for the third Advent; however, a clustering of three Advent cantatas in the year 1716 does not conform to the customs of Weimar (new pieces monthly, as indicated by Dok. II Nr. 66; for the second Advent of 1716, the cantata BWV 70.1 is already evidenced by Weimar parts); style (incorporation of chorus) and autograph dating of the score to the year 1723 (D: P 53) also argue for a date of composition in 1723

Movement 1, 3, 5, 8, 10: Written by Salomo Franck (as indicated by the text print). The author of the added movements 2, 4, 7, and 9 is unknown. Movement 6 and 11: Es ist das Heil uns kommen her (P. Speratus, 1523), stanzas 11–12. The text print for the 3rd Advent is by Franck in 1717, page 6 (only movements 1, 3, 5, 8, and 10)
